Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as an infant. The aunt she had was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could devote her day to theatre and literature as well as art. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. DuVernay's mother also had an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay to express herself via artwork. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights Movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Alabama's Selma inspire her later to make a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism when she was just a young student. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the waste from one of the jury. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy and, following her decision not to pursue a career in journalism, she moved on into the industry of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in an unassuming production studio straight out of school. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency.
